james porter created the topic: LED landing lights cause radio noise(only with engine running)
I installed two LED landing lights (6 LED's each). Ground testing using battery power was normal. No effect on radio reception or operation.
However, once the engine is operated (with the alternator engaged) the radio immediately goes into squelch and indicates RX. Only a fairly strong transmission can overpower the squelch.
I grounded the aluminum cases (on the LED landing lights) and used ferrite coils on the power/ground wires. The result was no change.
Again the radio functions fine on battery power and even when the engine is first started, so long as the alternator has not come online. Once the alternator comes online the squelch starts.
You can turn up the radio squelch to 80 percent (which obviously decreases the sensitivity) and the squelch will go away- but that of course decreases the sensitivity and the reception range of the radio.
I have spoken to Dynon but they don't have any suggestions.
I assume this has something to do with the charging circuit and the LED's not being compatible.
Anyone else had this experience? Any suggestion on a fix?
The previous landing lights (quartz) operated fine and no radio noise.
I have a Rotax 912 iS Sport and Dynon Skyview screens with Dynon Com.
No other radio problems or issues.

The power wire for the two lights are picking up the "static" emitted by the generator and carrying it into your radio. Find some RD insulation tubes (metal mesh), insert the wires completely into the tubes, covering as much of the wires as possible, and ground ONE end of the mesh tube.

Thank you Alan. Can you please explain why the previous quartz lights didn't pick up the static from the generator?

Sorry James, I cannot. It's possible there is a poor connection somewhere in the new lights wiring.

What LED Lights? 1W? 50W?
Simple Ballast Resistors, or an active LED power supply driver?

Try placing a 10-100uF capacitor across the power leads near the LEDs.

They are said to be 21 W and draw 1.2 A at 12 volts. Not much else is stated. Each has 6 led's and when operating they draw about 2 amps. The led's are mounted on a circuit board and enclosed in in an aluminum case with heat sink for cooling. From what I have read the power supply driver is probably not the ballast resistors.

The LED Driver is likely having an argument with the Voltage Regulator on the alternator. Every time the LED Driver decides on a current, the Regulator adjusts the voltage, which changes the current, and back and forth it goes a thousand times a second.

A Capacitor on the LED Supply line Near the Lights should act like a sedative and calm down all the nervous reactions.

Thank you. This explains why the squelch is generated when the alternator comes online.
I theorized that limiting the input voltage might help so I ordered two step down adjustable voltage regulators/limiters.
I like your fix better. The capacitors are available locally and on Sunday.

Thank you Jacques.
I just tried the suggestion of installing a capacitor at each light.
Unfortunately there was no difference.
As I mentioned earlier I ordered two step down adjustable voltage regulators/limiters.
I am hoping they will effectively deal with the noise by separating the LED's and the charging circuit.
If they don't work I will definitely install your fix.
Can you please describe how pronounced the noise was on your installation? Also, did your fix completely silence the noise?

The parasitic noise was like a whistling sound in the headset
Now it's completely silent
The filter must be installed as close as possible to the leds
I hope this will help you

Jacques-
I just assembled two of the filters you devised. They work GREAT!
Thank you so much for solving this problem.

GOOD , :)
Also looks at the movie I posted which shows the balancing of the carbus from the cockpit, with a servo I made
