I purchased an almost complete, Sonex, plans build, supplied with a new Rotax 912ULS and all the bits to go with it. Included is a very nice looking, homemade carburettor airbox, with cold/fresh air horn and integrated air filter.

From the outset I have felt (no science involved) that the integrated air filter may be undersized. I have tried to find Rotax recommendations for filter size/specifications but have not found anything yet.

The existing (single) air filter is a K&N BM-8006, that I plan to clean/replace every 50 hrs.

The engine seems to run just fine but still I worry.

Please advise:

 # Rotax recommended air filter surface area/specifications.

 # Your opinion of the K&N BM-8006 as a suitably sized air filter.

    Hi Alejandro,

    Thank you for your response.

     # Is this a Rotax recommendation?

     # Your recommendation? If so please justify

    Hi Sean.

Thank you for your reference. Unfortunatly this was all that came up:

"Minimum flow rate A minimum flow rate of 220 m³/h (288 yd³/h, 129 CFM) has to be warranted for all conditions. Pressure loss The pressure loss must not exceed 2 hPa. Choice of a suitable filter The following points should assist the aircraft manufacturer at the choice of a suitable filter: • 4 fold cotton fabric • Surface covered with metal screen • Total filter area at least 1400 cm² (217 in²) • Min. flow rate of 6.23 m³/min (480 yd³/h, 282 CFM), based on the surface area of filter material"

No mention of filter brand, part number. Nothing is the Spare Parts Manual.
