New 582 shortblock overheating
I recently had a new shortblock installed when my 582 blue top reached 8yrs/500 hrs, rather thatn strip the old one that was ruinning fine(Aquilla microlight at Ballito, KZN).
My old 582 ran exactly at a constant temp of 60 degrees.
During the run in of the new shortblock, the temps would very quickly go VERY high, over 80, even up to and past 9093, so I had to do the run in in stages.
After the +- 1 hr run in and during 1st short test flights, the engine was still running just as hot
I was very concerned and we tried the following:
* Tested water sender sensor / instruments (digital), boiling water registering 99 degrees, ok.
* Tried swapping the radiator that had been recored - no diff.
* Thermostat temporarily removed, temp down a few degrees.
* Thermostat tested in boiling water to check opening properly - left out for now
* Idle jets changed from 45 to 55, idle down from 2000 to 1800 and rougher (richer) up to 4000 due to richer mixture (now sounds same as old engine!), no effect on temp [jest were changed with new shortblock].
* Mid range needle changed to richer setting - better, stopped EGT's overheating past 625 degrees - fixed that problem.
* Result-> temp now 80/82 instead of 86+
Now after 10 hrs, the engine runs at abou 78 degrees at a +- steady 4500 rpm. If I put more load on the engine up to a constant 5000/5500 [e.g. with a pax] the temp quickly climbs to the 83/85 temp.
If I push it harder it gets even hotter.
The manual clearly statres normal temp range is 60 to 80 and 80 is the max, so I am very concerned
Any suggestions ?
Thanks
Peter
