Hi all,
My X series Airborne trike leaks fuel when I drop the mast forward to fit the wing - which rotates the engine about 70 deg fwd from the horizontal. Just overhauled and balanced carbs and it runs a treat, but fuel leaks from the breathing tubes all over the fuel tank and airframe even when fuel is off. Doesn't happen straight away - I suspect its the float valves being unsealed by the rotation and residual pressure from the fuel pump

Anybody else had this problem?

    Jeff,

Rotate the engine that far and the fuel will run out the overflow tubes. It won't really matter whether the floats unseat the valve or not. The float bowls are open to ambient air pressure all the time and are not pressurized. If your gas tank is below the engine, the only fuel you will lose is what is in the float bowl. Not much way to avoid this. You could use longer overflow tubes and run them to the bottom of the airframe. Won't stop the overflow but it will keep it off the plane. The overflow tubes on my PPC go all the way to the bottom of the airframe.

My nearly new DC 503 does the same on my trike...to avoid it I empty the bowls after flight and dont prime the system till I am fully rigged for flight.

I thought so - what a pain, it has been fixed in later models where the mast moves but not the motor! I guess I'll just have to get used to emptying the floats bowls.

    Many Thanks

    Hi Jeff,

I wouldn't empty them. Wrap them in a rag or towel until the mast is up or down or make a little cup or bowl to go around them until the procedure is over. You may cause more leaks if you drain constantly play with the carb bowls.

I always try to remember to turn the fuel off and run the motor till I start to hear it run out of fuel...but the rag idea is a good one Roger for when I forget,

You have me thinking now Roger...as part of my pre flight I always take the bowls off to inspect for crap...maybe not a good idea then.
