I need some help. I have a 2003 912UL in an Evektor Eurostar. I have had it for 10 years and for the first 5 years the oil temperature in the cruise was in the range 75-105 degC throughout the year.

About 5 years ago I had a problem that required an engine rebuild and since then the oil temperature has been much higher. Previously in the winter I had to block off part of the oil cooler and the coolant radiator to get the oil temp up to 100 degC even during the climb.

Partly as a result of this issue I had the engine disassembled and inspected again, nothing was found. I've checked the hose routing, cleaned out the oil cooler and checked the sensor, all without finding anything. I am finding that I have to throttle back in the climb to prevent the temperature from going above 120 degC.

I have not made any adjustments to the prop, the carbs or the cowling. What is odd is that the coolant temp is quite a bit lower at 65 degC. It is as though the heat in the oil is not being transferred to the coolant. I guess that if I had a water pump fault the CHT would be high and it is only about 80 degC.

I am at a loss to explain why this has happened. I have spoken to someone with exactly the same plane/engine configuration and they are getting oil temps 30 degrees lower than mine, just like I used to!

    what is your compression? too much blowby past the rings will super heat the oil.
    You can also measure this by testing the crankcase pressure: see SI-912-005

    I haven't done a compression check since the rebuild so I will do that. What is interesting is that it is burning oil at the rate of about 60ml/hr. It was doing this after the first rebuild and this was partly why I had it stripped and inspected again. The rings were replaced on the first rebuild as the old oil control rings were sticking and it started using oil. However the new rings didn't stop the oil burn and nothing was found on the second strip-down. In fact everthing looked really good for a 1000hr engine. I had the work done by a factory trained tech who specialises in Rotax engines so I think he would have probably found any problems.

    I'll take a look at the SI as I suspect that there may well be increased crankcase pressure. Quite where that leaves me I don't know. Why are my rings not sealing? I can't face the time and cost of having it stripped again!

    that's the max oil consumption, and that is unusual.
    A few things that will cause this:
    - honing the cylinders. This can damage them and is not allowed. How did the crosshatch look?
    -Using moly in the cylinders. basically this will ruin the cylinders. Some auto guys use it during engine assy.
    -too much piston/wall clearance. the allowable clearance is very small.
    -rings lined up. they should be staggered.

    I've attached a photo of the crosshatch that was taken when the engine was stripped. What do you think?
    The rings were staggered both when the engine was disassembled and when it was reassembled, I remember discussing that with the tech.
    The tech has worked on more 912 engines than I've had hot dinners, so I hoped he knew what he was doing. I don't imagine that he put any moly in the cylinders.
    The clearances were still within the production limits.
