Oil temp between 80 and 85 degrees

Hi all

The optimal oil temperature should be between 90 and 110 degrees Celsius (194F-230F).
Our plane have the optional oil thermostat mounted. It has a opening at 85C +/- 5C (185F).

Should we change the thermostat to for instance 95C (203F) to get in the 90-100C range?

    Hi Claus,

    The opening temp is fine. If it continues to climb up to at least 200F+ you're okay. If it stays at 185F then put a small 2" strip of aluminum tape across the cooler and the temps should end up where you want them. Don't use Duct tape because the clue melts off. Just use aluminum tape and wrap it around the edges of the cooler. This will help reduce some of the cold air flow and allow the temps to rise.

    Hi Roger

    Hmmm...

    But isn't the idea of having a thermostat mounted that you can keep the temperature up, even when it is could outside?
    Here it is not cold yet and covering the cooler seems just to destroy the idea of the thermostat system. If it gets really hot, it might no longer be able to cool the oil enough. I guess the thermostat both open and close according to the temperature. If I put in a 200F thermostat, it should at least be that temperature.
    Or did I misunderstand the idea of the thermostat?

    If you want a 200F opening thermostat then you can put it in, but any thermostat will only open at its preset temp and if the outside air flow is cold enough that is all it will go. Not every stat Mfg makes a stat up to 200F. The huge majority have 180F stats if they are used at all. Some have shutters doors to help close off some air flow. Many of us have nothing and just use a strip of aluminum tape.

    Sorry for asking again.

    Please see this diagram: Thermostat

    In my mind the oil is circulating through E1-E2 until it opens. When it opens, it will go E1-C1 to E2-C2.
    In other words. It will ALWAYS be able to go high enough in temperature even if it is freezing outside. The oil will not pass through the cooler until it is warm enough.

    Most oil thermostats do not shut completely off . they allow about 10% flow even when closed. If real cold air is flowing thru the oil cooler the oil will never warm up enough to open the thermostat. So you need to block off the air flow.
