Rotax says their new XPS aviation oil is only approved for the 916iS. What would make it okay for the 916iS but not the 912iS?

    Hi

The XPS has not yet finished the testing for the other engine types is all that says.  At some point it will be added to the list.  The XPS was tested extensively to solve high oil temps and that is the reason it is full synthetic rather than a blend.  They also had to do a lot of testing to be sure that this oil would work with leaded fuel.  (AVGAS 100LL) without any gumming and sticking of things like the piston rings.

We have been told that approval for the other 4 stroke Rotax engines will be done after testing is completed on the other Rotax types.

    Cheers

Thanks, Rotax Wizard. Makes sense, but just not sure how the XPS oil couldn't be fine for the 912iS considering it's so similar. Can you think of any reason the XPS oil might not work as well for the 912iS as it does for the 916iS?

The XPS oil testing has shown great ability on the 916 design to be used with auto or unleaded fuel.  The higher  oil temperatures of the 916 were a concern so that drove the testing.  With the other engines, like the 912ULS and the 912iS, we have other issues.  The piston and base compression is very different from the 916.  The oil must finish testing on the higher base compression versions and not show any problems.  (916 is lower compression even from the type 915 piston, different piston at just over 8 to 1 ratio)  The 912 and 912iS versions, almost 11 to 1 compression ratio, have cast pistons and not forged so this has to be verified that the oil will not develop any conditions that might be adverse to its use.  Signs of carbon build-up and detonation have to be monitored and evaluated the same as was tested for with the 916.  While I agree and believe that it will be just fine Rotax has stated they are not ready to make a recommendation without some empirical data with all the variables taken into consideration.  Currently that is what is being done now.

Any update on using the XPS oil in a 915is?

YES     It is fully approved for all Rotax with the release of the latest SI on fluids.  Download the SI for the data.  This oil also is approved for both Mogas and Avgas and Rotax created a new internal validation "RON 451" for that purpose.  The Shell is still on the list but Rotax will stop direct supply and switch to the XPS.  Shell supply via Rotax will go on as long as the distributors have stock.  Shell will then be the only supply of the Sport Plus 4.

A portion of the SI attached for your reference.
