I wonder if anyone has had this problem, when climbing out of canyons here in eastern Oregon my oil temp goes to 270 and higher. head temp is 205 egt 1400. oil pressure 60 and holding. question is this a gauge problem or is the oil actually heating that much ( gauge mgl engine monitor)

    Hi James,

It is possible. Some of this depends on where and how your coolers are setup and your engine. The CHT's are more a result of coolant temp verse the oil. So maybe your coolant radiator is getting more air flow and the oil cooler isn't getting as much. You could also have an oil hose with a reduced radius which slows the oil flow and causes higher oil temps. I wouldn't allow my oil temps to climb this high. Take a look and find out why.

    p.s.
Prop pitch plays a part here too, especially if it is over pitched.

is it possible that the oil is really that hot. would cht and egt climb as well if oil is really getting hot. prop is set for climb and has not changed since normal oil temps. would oil pressure drop if oil gets that hot. I really appreciate any help our local ap thinks its a gauge problem and I should not worry about it

If anyone knows a good rotax 912 mechanic in eastern Oregon, Washington, or northern Idaho I would like to have him check oil heating and carbs. thank you

    Hi James,

Is this a new problem that all of a sudden popped up? It was running without any issues before this? Has there been any recent maint? You can doubl check the oil temp probe. The VDO CHT and oil probe are the same and can be swapped. These are very reliable and my guess it is right. Oil pressure can and usually does drop with higher temp. When you start itisprobablyits highest and as the engine gets hot along with the oil the pressure drops, but should stabilize at some point.

For a Rotax mechanic go on to the Rainbow Aviation website and look under 120 hr. Repairmen by state or the Rotax flying club website and look for a Technican.

See my posting las week about high oil temps. All sorted by getting more air flowing over the cooler..
