912 UL KickBack Pb

Hi, every cold day I have Kickback on startup.

My engine number is 4409102 and I don't know if I have an old or new flywell ... how can I find this ?

I've installed a few month ago a brand new ignition module with soft start (but soft start unplugged).

Can I plug the soft start fonction on this engine on only one module (the other one is old with 5 wire) ?

    Let's start at the begining.
    Your modules should be the same and not different. Do not hook up one module without the other hooked up. Your older module start circuit may be gone to and you're just trying to start on the new module. Buy a second new module and hook up both soft starts. Your engine will love you for it. Make sure you have the new gold colored starter and not the older black one. The newer gold one that has actually been out for many years has a much higher torque and does a much better job at starting.
    Now make sure your plugs are gapped between .023 - .027. If it is cold there use the narrower gap. If you are gapped wider than .027 (i.e. in the .030+ range) this makes cold morning starts harder. Do you have the choke system hooked up or a primer system?
    If it is a primer system get rid of it and buy the inexpensive choke cable setup. It's far better. Depending on what your idle rpm is set at it may start easier with full choke and cracking the throttle a tiny bit. Low idle rpm planes benefit more from this than a higher rpm idle rpm setup.

    If it's really cold there think about investing in a good Tanis engine pre heater.

    If you continue to start like the video you will shortly be pulling the engine and replacing the starter and or the sprag clutch.

    Thank you very much for the quick response !
    Unfortunately I have the black starter.
    I have the choke system hooked up.
    Can you confirm that I can enjoy the soft start with the old flyweel?

    I will check my spark plugs.

    My modules are :
    966726
    965444

    When you said my module gone, you mean it does not work at low speed, because when I do the test at 3500 rpm both works very well.

    It won't be as good without the new flywheel, but it will be better than what you have. The newer starter would be a huge help.
    I mean the start circuit on the old module may not be working. It doesn't affect the normal running after it's already started.

    Hi Frank,
    I have experienced the same kickback symptoms with a 2008 912 uls.
    Old modules,pre mod flywheel.
    Initially replaced flywheel with little improvement.
    The replacement of the starting system sprag clutch and sprag housing totally rectified the starting issues.
    The original sprag clutch spring was sagged and housing internal surface scored just as documented in many articles online.

    Thank you everybody.
    I plugged the easystart module and start up on it, later (after 10s), I put the second module "on" and it's perfect !

    Roger will blame me ...

    As soon as I get the money, I'll add a second easystart module
