Hi Alan,
We do not recommend any engine built or worked on by Rotax Rick. We have seen too many issues, some with dire consequences (See attached)

The 618 had a very limited life, it was withdrawn many years ago as an aircraft version. The one pictured from RO is typical, it is a snowmobile version and not the aircraft version. (differences on the RAVE valve plungers, aircraft had a manual override for cables) The aircraft version also had a special muffler...the list goes on. Rotax Rick, like a few others, did many conversions of the snowmobile engine to run on aircraft.
i personally would not recommend one to anyone if you seek reliable power.
Cheers

I have one of his engines sitting in a crate in the hanger ready to go. After extensive research and sifting through the expected "hate" posts in various forums, I spoke to Rick and it sounded like he knew his craft and I decided to proceed and also go with the 582 upgrade to 612 option.
After going through the exercise of shipping, customs etc etc. The project cost soon blew out beyond the cost of a new boxed engine. Add that to Florida typhoons and then further delays with return shipping that could of been avoided. Which started to upset me, more than a little!
I needed another engine quick so rebuild one myself over the weekend using one of my other spares. Used all new internals (includung new crank). Its not rocket science, after all it is just a 2 stroke Price signigicantly cheaper but it did eat up spare time i did not have.
The 582 is a simple and tough engine that puts out a lot of power for its size, which makes it well suited for aviation use. They are labour intensive and do however, require higher frequency and involved maintenance. I think too many owners rely heavily on their robustness and do not do enough of the former and then.. the unfortunate happens!
One day I get around to unpacking and trying Rick's engine. When i do I will report back my findings and see how it goes.
