I recently bought a used silver top 582, it has a good service record and has had a fairly recent overhaul by a reputable service agent. However, on checking the rotary valve oil reservoir, I find it is filled with EP80 gear oil, not the recommended 2-stroke oil !
Anyone have any ideas about possible harm that may have been done by having the wrong oil in the rotary valve system ?

No harm done, but I would flush rotary valve gallery and replace with whatever 2 cycle oil you are using. Before changing the oil, I would mix a little of both oils in a cup and let it sit for a few days. It is rare, but sometimes different oils can gel if mixed together. If this happens in the cup, just make sure to thoroughly flush the gallery before putting in the new oil.

Hi Huw...I wonder why they filled it with thick gear oil....think my suspicious mind would be thinking its to disguise a leaking seal,

Hope its all ok....have you got a new aircraft then Huw seeing that you have a 582 now.

Hi Nick ! Ah, the BMW R100 dropped a valve in flight, aircraft OK but the engine destroyed itself, hence the 582 purchase !
The recent overhall had been done by a respected organisation not far from you up the M6, so it must be an error ( I hope ) - if not , I guess it will soon show up if a seal has gone - when we get it running !
    Thanks for your input. Huw
