I changed my battery, thinking I would solve the problem, but no! It still needed a boost from the car. I even charged the battery just before(new odyssey 680)to no avail. I hope it is not my starter as I have a Kitfox 111 and it is buried in the firewall!

    Hi Joseph,

I would check all the wiring connections first, especially the ground connections. What appears to be a weak battery is more often corrosion at the connections. Usual problem spots are the ground to engine block, the solenoid connections, and battery posts. Quickest way to check is to turn your master and mag switches off and attach a set of jumper cables to your battery, ground the negative cable to the block and touch the positive cable to the starter terminal on the starter. This will bypass all your wiring. If the starter works properly you know the starter and battery are OK. Clean up all the starter wiring connections and It should work. If it still doesn't work, turn the master switch on, mags and start switch off, and check the solenoid by jumping across the the solenoid terminals with one jumper cable.

    Hope this helps,

    Bill.

I had a similar problem with a new 582 in the early 90's. After several attempts to correct the problem, including installing a larger than normal motorcycle battery (with limited success), I removed the deeply buried starter (Kitfox II) and dissassembled it. When the starter had been newly assembled the brushes had been inserted with the copper mesh lead twisted 360 degrees. This caused the lead to rub on the stator sending some of the battery current directly to the stator without going through the brushes. The lead was cut almost through by friction and was useless. At that time the brushes were not available seperately requiring me to buy a $250 starter to correct the problem. It sure started up fine after that, though. :woohoo:

If it started when connected to your car I would say your wiring is prob ok and you have either a duff battery or it needs a good charge,

If you normally charge it with a std car/truck charger there is a good change you have damaged the small motor cycle battery...they need a dedicated very low out put charger....prefable one of these new computer controlled type that you leave connected 24/7,

I am talking from bitter experience after ruining several small a/c batts before I bought my optimate charger,

What are you OAT at the moment,

Sorry just re read your post...I see its a new battery you have....was it fully charged by you...and do that type of batt need a special charger...I'm not familiar with them.

    Nick.

I too have had the same problem, twice. Once was the starter motor brush cable and once was the cable from starter to solenoid. The engine vibration on the short cable had slowly snapped all the strands where it entered the ring terminal.
