The oil consumption of my grey-head 582 appears too low, being about 95:1. I have adjusted the oil injection pump lever -according to the book- with the two marks exactly opposite to each other in idle position. Have disassembled and cleaned the oil pump, gravity feeding from the oil tank seems OK and there is no oil filter present that might be clogged.

I cannot think of anything else than re-adjust the pump lever beyond the mark line to increase the oil injection ratio. Engine has 200 hrs. I normally fly with 5200 rpm. At this time I also pre-mix the fuel with 100:1 to avoid any risk.

Anyone who recognizes this problem and solved it?

Thanks,
Ron

one other thing you might check is the small brass tube in the side of the carb to see if they are clogged. If you are measuring the oil consumption at idle, 100/1 mix is about right. the pump lever changes the mix to 50/1 as you open the throttle. You've probably already checked this if you disassembled the pump but the plastic gears on the pump or the rotary valve shaft could be worn.

    Hi Bill,

Thanks for your comment. Yes indeed the mixing ratio reaches 50:1 only at higher power settings but I consider my average ratio as too low after making notes of the fuel and oil quantities used during the last flights. We had cleared the oil channel into each carb with compressed air so I’m pretty sure that’s OK. We did not notice wear of the gears either.

Glad I pre mix for piece of mind.
