I have two Bing 54 carbs on my Rotax 582 mod 99.

Each one has a 1/4" OD fuel line that runs from one side of the carb to the other side. Both lines have a hole at the lowest point, which is about midway. The holes look like they were intentionally punched - not manufactured that way.

Can anyone tell me what this line does, and why there's a hole at the lowest point?

Thanks (once again),
Mike

All they are are vent tubes for the carb float chambers...some years ago they used to fit 2 separate pipes to each carb body...but Rotax found a problem with that set-up and modified the idea to the U shaped tube.

The holes are just to allow any overflow to escape from the tube. I make my own by just drilling a couple of holes in the center of a length of fuel line. If I remember correctly, it's the same size fuel line used for the primer.

Does that mean it would be normal to see fuel dripping from the hole?

    Mike,

It's not normal to see fuel coming from the vent but it's not necessarily a problem either. Sometimes even a steep uncoordinated bank will cause an overflow. sometimes taxiing over rough ground can do it. If all your temps are good and the engine is running OK, I wouldn't worry about an occasional overflow.

If it becomes a common event though, it could be trash in the float valve, a leaky and sinking float, a fuel pump overpressuring the carb, or float arms out of adjustment. All easily fixable.

Bill, thanks for the info. I e only had my plane for a total of 5 engine hours so I'm on a steep learning curve. And I have never been into mechanics before so that is t helping. But I am planning to know everything I can about this engine!

All easily fixable? For you, maybe. For me? Ha! Lets sell some tickets and make a few bucks

I had no engine problems during those 5 hours last Fall and I hope that continues so I will have time to learn more before something does go wrong.

I also need to learn more about the carbs. I wish I had an old one to tear apart and look inside!
