Hello from downunder,

My names Jack and I have an issue, I have a rotax 277 i purchased about 6 months ago and I could not be told the history of the motor when i did buy it, now the issue it it starts well runs well for about 5 minutes till the engine appears warmed up then just randomly dies, It then takes me ages to get it to run again it wont even attempt to start after 20 pulls then it splutters for another 20 pulls stopping after 2-5 seconds then if im lucky it will start and run, this usually all happens after ive let it cool down for 15 minutes and keep adding choke taking it off and so forth for about 10 seconds. Im not that machanically minded but im slowly learning would anyone know what i should look at first? please and thankyou so much im loosing sleep over this :(

Hi Jack...when it stop have you tried taking the carn bowl off and see if its got plenty of fuel in it....the 277 is not an engine I'm familiar with.

    Jack,

Sounds like a fuel problem. Do what Nick says and remove the fuel bowls. Remove them carefully so you don't spill any fuel. The fuel level in the bowl should be 12mm from the top of the bowl with the floats removed. If the bowl is low or empty, you could have a bad fuel pump or trash in the float valve. If the fuel in the bowl is at the proper level, it could be
a blocked main jet or needle jet.

If you have a primer, give it a shot when the engine begins to sputter. If it begins to run properly you have a fuel flow problem.

Spark problems usually happen suddenly. Its running fine and it stops. Sputtering usually indicates a fuel problem.

    Good luck,

    Bill.

I remember a few good few years ago I owned a small 2 cycle outboard motor...used to stop on me after around 20 mins of use....to cut a long story short it turned out to be a faulty condenser in the old fashioned contact breaker ignition system...which I presume the 277 has...when the condenser got hot it would cut out till it cooled,

I would still check out the fuel sys first as Bill says.

    Nick.
