I have recently changed my Rotax 582 engine (mine had done 890 hours, so replaced with one that had done 190 hours).

All is good, however, the small oil reservoir for the oil injection system keeps 'blowing out' and emptying during flight.

To be clear, this is NOT the main 2-stroke oil tank, but the SMALL reservoir for the system that lubricates the parts beyond the carbs (is it the rotary valve?), etc.

I have no clue what is causing this and am worried that with no oil in the lubrication system for part or all of the flight it could be causing damage to the engine.

Is anyone able to give me any pointers as to the cause and any possible remedies?

John. Without a bit more information it is impossible to do a diagnosis. Loss of lubrication on the water pump/rotary valve system should keep you on the ground until it is resolved. Lack of lubricating oil on these components will cause a catastrophic failure, damaging the engine beyond repair.

Hi Dennis, Thank you for the reply and guidance. Allow me to try and give you some more information, as well as provide feedback from the official Rotax agent in South Africa.

To confirm, my engine is a Rotax 582 Mod 90 (silver top).

    Firstly, what is happening:
    1. I fill the oil reservoir with oil up to the marker (about 2/3 full)
    2. I fly the aircraft
    3. Then, after landing, most, if not all (say only about 5mm left in the bottom) of the oil in the reservoir has been 'expelled' through the thread of the cap/lid. Initially, there was no vent hole in the cap/lid, so I added a hole in the cap/lid and the seal, and it made it worse. The oil reservoir completely emptied.

Now, speaking to the local Rotax agent, who is really competent from a technical perspective, it appears that the two seals around the shaft that drives the rotary valve and water pump, which this oil supply lubricates, appear to be worn, and which is allowing pressure from the engine back up the oil supply/return pipes.

The downside of this prognosis is that the two seals are apparently not available as separate items, and must be ordered with the complete crank.

I find this really hard to believe, as the cost of this 'repair' suddenly becomes enormous.

The engine has only done 190 hours, so I cannot get my head around the fact that these seals have worn. My last Rotax 582 had done 900 hours without an issue.

Any further comments would be welcomed.

The engine in question is quite old, the hours of operation is not the issue, rather the method of storage when the engine is not in use. If the seals are not sealing than the issue must be addressed. Quite likely you will find that the bearings have suffered from poor storage causing the seals to fail. If this is the case then it is time to replace the crank.
