How does a Rotax engine get a UL designation? Is it simply having a gear box, dual carb and dual ignition systems or are the engines built differently internally? I have a Rotax 503, Dual carb, DCDI engine with 2.58:1 "B" gear box, Motor Number 5766914, does it fall under the "UL" identification criteria or is it simply a standard snowmobile engine with a gear box bolted to it? I'd appreciate any information or insight into this. Thank you and happy flying!

    5766914 is an aircraft engine.
I am not an 2-stroke expert but there are differences:
Most internal parts are specific to the aircraft engine.
Power curve is very different (snowmobile engines are NOT suitable for a propeller load)
    Dual ignition.

As Rob points out above, the 503 is not a 'snowmobile' engine, it's a purpose built aircraft powerplant (compared to a real snowmobile engine it has different torque/power curves, etc)...

The UL designation means that the engine does not have a type certificate, and is only for amateur/experimental 'ultralight' (etc.) aircraft use...

    From the 503 Operators Manual:
