 I am sure this question has been asked before but I could not find it in the search engine.

I have; Installation Manual, Chapter 79-00-00, Page 20 & 21, Figure 11.11 Position and location of the oil tank, open in front of me.

Confusion;

1. " NOTE The oil tank(1) has to be positioned such that the oil level(2) is always between 0 and -400mm on the z-axis"

# Should this be the horizontal -y axis, as illustrated?

# The -y axis is horizontal, passing through the gearbox output shaft.

# The -z axis is vertical, passing through the gearbox output shaft.

# I would assume that vertical measurements should be in relation to the horizontal (y-) axis - please explain?

2. If the oil level should be between 0 and -400mm, why is it shown below the max .400mm  measurement in Figure 11.11?

3. "NOTE The profile of the clamp of oil tank should be between +40mm and -360mm on the z-axis"

# I have not found an illustration with the term/name "....profile of the clamp of oil tank..." Please explain?

4. Is it possible to have the oil level measurement above (1.) relative to the gearbox output shaft (0-400mm), diffrent to the 3. profile of the clamp of oil tank between +40mm and -360mm?

# In other words - if one measurement is correct, will the other also be correct?

# Or must both be adhered to?

    Hi Sean,

    1. The manual doesn't say "from" the z axis, it says "on" the z axis - meaning the measurement is in the vertical direction.

    2. If you look very closely at the illustration, the 400 mm dimension line is exactly halfway beween the high and low level marks on the dipstick. The shading for the oil level looks suspiciously like the oil level from before Rotax modified the dipstick design with a higher oil level - probably a case of neglecting to update some parts of the illustration when the change was made.

    3. I'm fairly sure that they're talking about the v-band clamp which holds the top of the oil tank on.

    4. Strictly speaking, of course it is possible for the oil level to vary in relation to the oil tank - the oil level depends on how much oil is in the tank, after all. However, I think what they're talking about is the normal oil level, which appears to be about 40 mm below the v-band clamp.

    Version 2.1 of the installation manual has a note (which has been left out of the current version) saying that the ideal oil tank height is with the oil at the same level as the oil pump. (V-band clamp at 360 mm below prop shaft)

    Sean

    The description is indeed a bit confusing.  This is because engineers forget that they are not talking to other engineers for the most part.  The prop shaft enter is visible and an easy reference.  As such it is used for an X and Y axis reference point.  Technically they are trying to get the oil full point above the oil inlet to the oil pump for some obvious reasons.  Since we cant see the oil full point inside the tank it is a rather difficult thing to call out.  The reference to the oil tank clamp is one we can understand and is visible to us so by default is the easiest to use.  This sits aobut 40 mm above the oil in the tank.  So Tim has it correct.

    Cheers

    I don't actually have a problem with the concept, just the language and the double references points. Both could be simplified and more direct;

    Language

    Just make all reference to horizontal axis, as shown through the gearbox output shaft. -y & -z are redundant and just confuse people

    Reference Points

    As RW has intimated, reference to the oil level, which we cannot see, should be deleted

    Reference to the "...profile of the clamp of oil tank..."  should be retained but the wording changed, to something like oil tank lid clamp edge.
