Is it possible to reuse piston rings in 912S used for 2000 hours.

The owner thinks new ones are pretty expensive.

The engine has already been taking apart.

I would if you're doing this type of maint. Ring's aren't hard to do.

Rotax states pistons can be reused if they measure within the 50% or under total wear.  (see heavy maintenance manual)  At 2000 hour however the rings should be changed.  If you are not going to overhaul as per the Rotax requirements then you can always just take that responsibility and evaluation yourself.

If you do reuse rings they have to be kept on the same pistons and assembled back into the same cylinder.

Thank you, I know but the owner find it very expensive

If it will not stand it's easy to install new rings later

    HI Gudmundur

OK I understand but please explain to them that if the rings become worn they may damage the piston ring grooves  and start to increase crankcase blowby gases into the crankcase.  i think that pistons and rings together will be much more expensive at some point.  Waiting until there is a performance drop (loss of compression) seems to be taking a risk, at least for me.

    Cheers

I agree with RW. Always better safe than sorry. Plus in this case cheaper up front is worth not having to cough up a lot more money later.
