I have a minor coolant leak and it *appears* to be coming from the pump, but I am not 100% convinced. This post was very helpful in locating other places that the leak might be coming from:

https://www.rotax-owner.com/en/912-914-technical-questions/9644-coolant-leak_1

If the leak is coming from the weep hole and its minor (a coolant top off every 50hrs or so), it sounds like it might be ok.

First question - where is the weep hole exactly? I have searched all the Rotax manuals and cannot find it mentioned anywhere. Is it basically where #13 is pointing in the illustrated parts guide (attached)?

Second question, the 1999 service instruction SI-912-001 "INSTALLATION OF ROTARY WATER PUMP SEAL / PUMP IMPELLER" has a section about tolerated leakage quoted below, is this test applicable to my engine? I understand the water pump design changed at some point.

From SI-912-001:
"For this check the engine must be operated until all temperatures have stabilized for a period of 5 minutes. At that point shut down engine and ensure the ignition is switched off and engine secured against unintentional operation.

Coolant must not drip through leakage bore, located at the base of the igniton housing, for a period of 1 minute after the engine has been stopped.
In case this leakage test can not be passed, the rotary seal must be renewed."

Thanks!
Dan Harrington

    Hi Dan,

Having a slow/small weep, from the bottom of the coolant pump is normal BUT how much are you adding"..... every 50hrs" ?

By comparison - I might add up to 100 mm, to my expansion tank /reservoir, in a similar time period. I have never had to add coolant to the main system (radiator cap).😈

I just noticed the leak this week and so far the reservoir has not gone done any visible amount but there was about a tablespoon of coolant on the floor under my engine after about a week of sitting.

Weep hole is the vertical open shaft depicted just to the right of Circle #5 on Fig. 1 / Detail "A" at:  https://legacy.rotaxowner.com/si_tb_info/serviceinfo/si912001.pdf

This can happen in cold weather. If it's cold put and you see a tablespoon of coolant on the floor that can be normal. That said you can still check it out and make sure where it's coming from.

Thank you!  This might be it, I noticed the coolant on the floor after our first week of cold weather for the year.  I will check it out and make sure I know with 100% certainty where the coolant is coming from.
