I'm building a kitplane with a 914, it will sit for a while between engine runs.

I'd like to drain the gas out of the carbs before it sits.

Should I turn off the pumps and run the engine out of fuel?

Or open the drain plug on the bottom of the carb, would that get all the fuel out?

    Hi Shaun

The 914 has dual electric pumps.  If you switch them both off the engine will stop almost immediately.  just turn off your fuel at idle speed and allow the float bowls to suck the fuel dry.  Never think of the float bowl retaining nuts as drains, they are not.  Removal and replacement of those can lead to very serious problems if placed back with higher than required torque.  It is best not to remove them until required for carb service.

Depending on how long you are going to let it sit consider using some Avgas on your last engine run.  The high percent of Toluene in 100LL is a very good cleaner and will prevent gums from forming on your inner carb bits.

    Cheers
