I had need to use the TLR4.6A program on my Rotax 914.

Two problems I encountered

1. The current Rotax Heavy Maintenance Book only displays log information for the TLR4.3 program and 12 columns, it is not relevant to the 8 columns only from the 4.6 program.

Could someone give me a description of what each column represents for the log output of the TLR4.6a program (I have worked out the obvious ones - that leaves 4 to guess).

2. I had real problems in interfacing to the TCU unit. I tried 2 different USB to serial laptop cables on 2 different laptops, one running XP the other Windows 7 - neither worked. I solved it by sitting an old tower computer in the back of my plane with a plain old serial port. Would like to get a USB to serial cable that works for a laptop as it is difficult flying around the sky with a mains cable plugged in :(

Just as matter of interest this engine is brand new but I have had it for 3 1/2 years. I decided to check the carbs and found the needle positions different, one carb was slot 2 the other slot 3. So much for the factory tests. Now set to slot 3 and tested as per the ROAN rgearding 2200 rpm and choke testing. All perfect.

Cheers and thanks

    Peter,

    1) Here is a printout of a 4.6 TCU. The 8 columns are identified at the top of the printout.

    2) The TLR software is an old DOS program that needs to communicate with a serial port on COM1 or COM2. When using a USB to Serial adapter, the newer operating system usually assign the serial port to a higher com port like COM9 to avoid communication conflict.

Here is a quick reference to set up the TLR software using a USB to serial adapter.
    [TLR Software Connection]

    3) Rotax has delivered the 914 with staggered needle positions for some time now. Since the airflow coming into the airbox from the turbo charger comes in from the 1/3 side of the airbox, the 2/4 carburetor will get slightly more "ram" air pressure than the 1/3 carburetor. To compensate for this, the needle is set richer on the 2/4 carb. Some engines like this staggered setup, some engine run better with the needles even.

    Hope this helps,
    Rotax Owner.

Thanks, clarifies a lot of things. Interesting, knew the comm 1 2 issue and had reset my serial ports on my USB connection to comm 1, did not work on either computer or operating system. Then tried comm 2. Same problem.

Will check it again, I am an old computer engineer so I have learnt not to say I know what I am doing I have been proved wrong too many times in the past. :cheer:

    Cheers and thanks

That explains the 8 columns but in the Alerts log, what does "mode" refer to? One sees "I" and "O" from time to time.

What is in the "time" entry column? Hours:minutes of operation of the TCU?
