How many turns of the prop does it take you to get a gurgle for oil level check? I have done it so many different ways and sometimes never get a gurgle other times it takes about over 30 turns. I have tried it hot, cold and warm. I have tried turning the prop slow, medium and fast. It is very frustrating when checking the oil before a flight and even more frustrating when it comes time for an oil change and can't get the oil back to the canister. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

    Hi Dennis,

I personally would rotate it up to 20 times and if you don't here a gurgle then I wouldn't worry any more after that. If you rotate up to 40-50 times then all your going to get is tired. You should be able to check the level and drain the oil with 20 turns without any worries. The little bit of oil we are talking about isn't going to make a big difference. It may be transferring the oil only more silently.

    Hallo Dennis,

be careful when turning the prop when the engine is still hot. Even if the mag's are off u still might get the engine to fire. there might be glowing particals on top of your piston. :(

    With regards

Thanks guys for the response. The main problem is when the oil does not raise at all back into the canister. I checked the oil level, turned the prop 20+ times and no rise in level. Other times I get some rise but no gurgle. Then on those lucky days I get a gurgle and the oil is at the top level. Right now I am only turning the prop when it is cool with summer being here.
Does anyone know of any "tricks"? I know the rotax does not burn hardly any oil. Like I said it is most important to me when I change the oil to get it all back in the canister.
    Thanks!

Has anyone ever checked the oil level before gurgle and not had any oil on the stick but after gurgle oil is at the top of full on the stick? I do not recall this happening before.

I find it easier to get a gurgle while the engine is still warm.

    Thanks for any input.

I usually find when I get a gurgle that before I get oil showing right below the minimum level and after the gurgle it is at the top.
