    Hi To all:
I think you are confusing the Challenger Filter as it is U$195.00 no way to save U$10 against the Rotax Filter. This one is Reusable so it is much less contamination, that is why I decided to buy one. Anyway I made some research and here are the results:

Challenger oil filters are manufactured with woven stainless steel filter cloth which allows higher flow rates which keeps more oil flowing through the media instead of the bypass. This provides faster oil pressure at startup relieves back pressure against the oil pump freeing up parasitic horsepower losses.

Our filters can provide the same filtration level as a paper filter yet flow much more oil. The reason is paper and synthetic filter media is made of fibers that are pressed or glued together until you get to a thickness that meets the filtration target. This introduces much more restriction than the diameter of the fine wires which are used in the weave to hold the consistent filtration level of the media.

The bypass plates used in paper filters can stick when either opening or closing. If the plate bypass sticks while closing there will be unfiltered oil going past the filter media even if a low differential pressure is present. Our bypass is a ball in a machined tapered seat which allows the bypass to fully close if it ever opened.

it seems to me and my mechanic to be a high quality product.I just installed one 30 engine hours ago and all fine. I give you more comments in my next oil change. :)

    Hi Roger,

    You wrote, in part --
"....stick with something safe like the Rotax oil filter....."

I know this has been beaten to the point of maybe being a dead horse.

    But ----
There are two, or maybe three, main mreasons anyone would use something other than the Rotax official filter:
    1) The newest Rotax filter is a bit longer and in some installations requires the #2 header pipe be pulled of to be able to remove and replace the filter.
(I kicked this around in another thread so won't rehash it here.)
    2) Cost: As you and everyone else knows you can get filters that appear to be suitable for the 912 for as little as 1/4th of the Rotax price (but raise as you do issues of whether there might be some risk... pennywise and pound foolish.
AND IMO now a third one:
Some manufacture claiming their filter is specifically for the 912 and claiming it is superior (but the same price.)

That's the one I'd like opinions on:
    Aircraft Spruce sells the
    TEMPEST ROTAX OIL FILTERS
    Part # 08-07226

As far as I can see they don't even carry the official Rotax filter.
Just as expensive as the Rotax filter,
but Tempest claims it is superior:
    Here's their spiel:

    "Filter Specs
› Full can thickness of .019”
› Base plate thickness of .100”
    › Burst pressure of 275 – 325 psi
› Media content of 118 sq. in.
› Safety wire lock tab ring
The Rotax filter compares with a
    burst of 240 – 270 psi, 104 sq. in.
of media, no safety wire lock tab
    ring and no magnet."

    Any thoughts/reactions:
My first reaction is "Well, if superior and specifically designed for Rotax and no more costly, and 'made in the USA' , why not?"
My second reaction is "Doesn't save me a dime. Why get off the beaten/known track?"

    Final question:
Roger, or anyone, has any new information or experience come in since you posted about a year ago on this thread that might change your "stick with the Rotax part" opinion?
