Goog morning,

Yesterday I had to remove the oil reservior to empty the oil during the first oil change. The oil drain plug was situated directly over the muffler and almost impossible to get to, so I beleive this was the best way to insure that all the oil could be drained out.

My question: After removing the reservior, I poured the oil out through the filler cap, instead of removing the drain plug. This seemed to be a quicker solution.
Does this method cause any problems within the reservior, such as the screen or other internal parts?

Engine was burped prior to drainage. Removed close to 3 liters from canister and filter.
The magnetic plug was clean except for a few minute burrs.

Thanks,
Rich

    Hi Rich

If you still have the oil tank removed I would suggest you undo the big clip and clean the tank. You can get sludge and bits of silicone gasket in the bottom of the tank and most of this can be removed by draining through the drain plug. If you have removed the tank and tipped it upside down a lot of that sludge could still be in there. It won't be a problem as it is filtered before it goes into your engine, but you don't want your filter getting clogged up. I would flush the tank clean, and clean the mesh with brake cleaner. I usually do it every 300 hrs.

    Mark,

Thanks for the reply. I have already reassembled everything and changed the oil. On my next change, I'll remove the canister and drain through the plug. Will do as you suggested and clean the canister and screen every 300 hrs.

Have you found any sludge or blockage at the screen when removed at those intervals?

I am only talking about a few bits that may come out with the oil, nothing to worry about, but if you have to remove the tank, you may as well clean it.
