Roger, what do you mean by "old needle Valves"

    Hi Ryan,

Quite a few years ago the Bing 64 came with red tipped needle valves. Rotax issued a bulletin a number of years ago to replace them with the black tipped needle valves which are still in use today. Johns's engine of 10 years would have the red tipped needle valves if they were never replaced or the carbs rebuilt.

My engine was built around 2002. I sent the carbs to lockwood about 4-5 years ago and had them rebuilt. I need to check the logs and see when they were built, they are at the hangar. Would they have changed that during the rebuild.

    Hi Ryan,

Yes Lockwood would have used the correct float needle valve when they rebuilt your carbs 4-5 years ago.

Thanks for your help gents, I really appreciate it. I'll certainly look at the issues you suggest, starting with the plug gaps and carb needles. My problem is that my nearest Rotax engineer is 200 miles away in the UK, so I need to try as much as I can myself before I wave the white flag! What I'm describing as a 'blip', is a momentary loss of power just after take-off, where the plane briefly shudders, but then clears and I can't seem to replicate the symptoms again in the upper air. How much skill do you need to rebuild the carbs? I'm not a complete 'non-starter' with the spanners by any means, and can usually manage routine maintenance. Thanks again.
