I searched the forum topics, but didn't find a direct answer to the question I have. You see I have an "itch that needs to be scratched." After a very cold winter in Northern Utah I want to fly my Titan Tornado II powered by a 912S somewhere (cross-country) real bad. But I don't want to trash my rotax with all that lead in 100LL.

I was wondering if the lead problems could be mitigated by changing the oil directly after the flight rather than waiting for the 25 hour flight time?

I could get re-checked out in the club C-172, but flying my Tornado is much more fun. But if running any 100LL us hard on the engine, I would rather extend its life, and fly the 172. Any thoughts?

    Hi Ron,

Go enjoy your flight in your plane. We all have to use 100LL when we travel. For the small amount you'll use compared to the life of the engine it isn't worth loosing any sleep over. You should however use a lead scavenger like Decalin to help keep the leading down. It isn't a cure all, but it definitely helps. You can buy it at Aircraft Spruce. It's about $18 for a bottle and you only use 1/2 oz. per 10 gals. Change the oil at 25 hrs. and that will be okay.

    Hi Roger,

I have the Alcor TCP. Is Declain better, or does it matter?

    Thanks,
    Ron

    Hi Ron,

Decalin and TCP basically do the same thing. They are lead scavengers, but TCP has some harsher chemicals and you aren't supposed to carry it in the cabin or leave it on painted surfaces. Decalin is a little nicer to use. They both work. TCP per qt. is about $44 and Decalin a qt. is about $29 or you can buy Decalin in a pint if you don't need it very often. Makes my choice easier.
