Over the last year I have had a hard start issue. I initially thought it was a fuel problem because when I removed the float bowls one was completely full. After replacing the float needle valves and adjusting, several times, the float level, inspecting the floats and blowing carb cleaner through all the tiny little passages, the problem was still there. Intermittantly, of course. I talked to Roger on the phone and a Lockwood tech as well. That left the ingnition modules. I sent them off to Lockwood to bench test and.....they failed. Both of them. They wouldn't start firing until 1800/2300rpm after 7/18 seconds. Lockwood said they have had this happen to several engines from my era, 2005, or thereabouts. It has happened often enough that they have a package deal: 2 modules, with soft start built in, for $882. You can also buy the old style, without the soft start, for about $1000 each. You can guess which one I went with.

Does anyone have any idea why these modules both failed? I assume they failed one at a time and the first failure wasn't noticed because it would start on the good one and the second one would chime in after a few seconds. As far as Lockwood knew the modules never failed completely and would run perfectly after they began to spark on the first start of the day.
