Hi Rotax Owners,

I have a question regarding the installation of the oil cooler. I see in the Rotax installation manual to install the oil cooler with the fitting ports point up. I notice the Tecnam factory, i.e. Eaglet and Bravo airplanes have the fitting ports pointing down. I know the manual discourages this because of draining of the oil cooler when sitting for long periods.

I am curious if anyone has any additional insight reqarding this and if the oil drains out of the cooler where doe it go?

Thank you for your time,

    Brent,

Everything depends on the plumbing. If the oil cooler is below the engine and oil tank, it can't drain out regardless of its orientation. If it does siphon out for some reason, and that is unlikely, it will go either to the crankcase or the oil tank. Biggest installation problem is getting oil into the cooler if the fittings are on the bottom. When I installed mine, I oriented the cooler with fittings up and filled the cooler before hooking up the oil lines. Once you get the system purged, the cooler will work in any position, It is just easier to purge the cooler if it is installed fittings up and prefilled. Also by mounting with fittings up, you can be sure there is no air trapped in the top of the cooler. If you follow the Rotax recommendations regarding the location of the cooler and the oil tank in relation to the engine, You won't have a problem even if the cooler is mounted with fittings down.

    Bill,

Thank you for the reply. The Rotax manuals leave some things to be desired, so the explanation helps and is what I was thinking also.

    Thank you,
    Brent
