Are 2 in filters adequate for 100 Hp 912 or does one need the 7 in filter. Had a pair of the 7 in ones and both tore at the carb mount on a kitfox 4. Any advice appreciated

    Jed,

I use the flat filters on my 912S. By flat, I mean it is about 7" dia. and 2" thick. There is no room for a long filter between my carbs and the firewall. Any of the filters rotax makes for the 912 will work equally well as far as airflow is concerned.

I would guess that from an engineering standpoint, a long filter would be more subject to vibration flexing at the carb joint due to its longer moment arm. A short, fat filter would weigh just as much but be less likely to fail at the carb joint. That's just a guess because I've actually never seen an air filter fail. Short, long, conical, or otherwise, the shape won't matter as long as you have adequate square inches of filter area.

    Bill.
