Hi folks,

I've got a Rotax 912Ul, S/N 4402046 with approx. 1.600 hours on it, which has given sterling service yet. Within the last 25 hours it has developed an oil leak on the top side between #2 cylinder and the cylinder head. The amount of leakage is small (more of a seepage) but as it's increasing it worries me. Barrel/crankcase as well as rocker covers are clean. As there is no gasket between head and cylinder barrel, any ideas where the oil might be coming from?

Kind regards

Claus

Strange, it must be coming from the combustion chamber. Is it black oil?
A overhaul shop can re-surface the mating surfaces of the cylinder and head.
You need to remove the cylinder and explore why it is leaking: is it chafing/fretting from an overheat? Detonation? studs not torqued correctly? or??

Yes, it's black and gooey. Seems like some soot in the oil as well. Studs seem torqued correctly, checked with torque wrench. EGT are all equal, in fact the #2 cylinder is lower by 20-30°C than the rest (no difference in compression ratio though). Spark plugs are all light brown. Appears I will have to pull the head and do some measuring, unless someone has any other ideas...

You should pull the heads to check this. I just saw a head where it had a leak and the hot exhaust gases cut all the way through because it was left unchecked.
