Rob, thanks for the tip on replacing the cooler and hoses, I will make sure to do that. I don't have a source for good, used, cheap parts so I will save up for a new engine and part out the old one as you suggested.

Roger, I don't know what kind of oil the previous owner used. When I bought the plane I drained all of the oil and installed Aeroshell Sport Plus 4 oil. I purged the oil system as per the video on this site. After that I flew the plane for about 15 hours with no problems.

When I was disassembling the engine today, I did notice an oily mist covering the rear of the engine compartment, I am wondering if a seal or hose started leaking and caused the crankshaft bearing to starve for oil.

What was the oil level in the tank after this?

    Hi Roger,

Sorry for the delay in replying. If anything the oil level was slightly higher than normal. I went out to the airport today and drained all of the oil out of the engine and found that there was 3 liters just like there is supposed to be.

I did notice something strange though, normally the oil level is lower than normal until I pull the prop through until I get the "gurgle" in the oil reservoir and then the level in the reservoir indicates normal.

This time I wasn't able to pull the prop through because the engine is disassembled, however it seemed like most of the oil in the system was in the reservoir already, and there was very little in the hoses, oil cooler, and filter. It seemed like there was about 2.5 liters of oil in the reservoir and only about 0.5 liters in the rest of the system. Doesn't seem normal for an engine that's hasn't been running for several months.

See pictures below to view the amount of oil found in the reservoir and the amount of oil collected from the whole system. The large container has 2 liters of oil in it and the small container has one liter of oil in it.

I guess at this point it doesn't really matter what caused the failure since I need a new engine anyways and will be replacing the oil cooler and all the hoses. First I need to save up some money though.

Is that oil as black as it looks or is it a trick of the light? Your post said you only had about 15 hrs on that oil. Right?

Yes that's correct, there is about 15 hours on that oil. It isn't quite as black as it appears in the pictures but it definitely seems darker than it should for only having 15 hours on it.
