erratic oil temp reading.

I was flying my kit fox 912 80horse to its annual condition inspection and the oil temp gauge died. then came back to life several times. the plane went into maintenance and we decided to restore much of it. It has been on the ground in a climate controlled hangar for 18 months. (I could build one in that time) Now as I reassemble the plane for its engine test I am wondering how to trouble shoot the oil temp sensor and gauge. The manual doesn't have a lot of help. Can I troubleshoot before starting?
