Hello
I'm interested in buying a rotax engine 914F for my ultra-light .
From your website I understood that 914 engines have two distinguish configurations: with and without clutch.
1. What are the main differences between the two configurations?
2. Are there any safety issues in regard of using the engine without clutch?
3. Why are there changes in the maintenance policy of the gearbox from 600 hr to 1000 hr?

thanks

    Hi Koby,

One gearbox has an overload clutch and the other doesn't. The 912UL engine doesn't have a clutch either and the 912ULS prior to approximately 2003 in the US didn't have them from the factory unless and owner put one in. Around 2003 Kodiak, importer for the US, started putting clutches in all 912ULS engines.

No real safety issues and they both will run just fine.

The 600 hr. gearbox inspection is based on the TBO of 1500 hr engine's and or if you have a 2000 TBO engine it is based on 100LL use more than 30% of the time. Lead clogs things up from deposits. Keep the use of 100LL as low as possible and if you don't have to use it don't. If you have a 2000 hr. TBO and use 100LL less than 30% of the time or use mainly unleaded auto fuel then the gearbox inspection is 1000 hrs.

Roger, just to clarify this for everyone.
    All gearbox tear down and inspection intervals are as follows;

Non Slipper 912(80hp) 912ULS/S(100hp) and 914(115HP) - 600hrs tear down & inspection irrespective of fuel type.

Slipper 912(80hp)- Friction torque every 100hrs or annually, tear down & inspection at TBO unless using leaded fuels when an interim 600hourly inspection on the slipper clutch is required.
    .
Slipper 912ULS/S(100hp) and 914(115HP) - Friction torque every 100hrs or annually, tear down & inspection at 1000Hr unless using leaded fuels when an interim 600hourly inspection on the slipper clutch is required.

Some of the early 912/914 gearboxes/engines had as little as 600Hr TBO. Modifications to the gearbox may be needed to upgrade their TBO.

Please note - The 912iS has different maintenance requirements.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.
Does your answer also refer to the 914 series?
Do you recommend using the engine configuration with or without the clutch considering safety aspects?
