Examining the particles left in my oil filter I found a half dozen or more of these tiny black or dark brown whiskers. The attached photo was taken through a low power microscope. My engine is a 2006 912ULS with 630TT. I've nver seen this before. The whiskers do not look to be metallic, and they bend like a fine hair when pressed on. Any ideas? Roger, have you seen this before?
Thanks,

Has the gearbox been maintenances in the last 100 hrs.?
If it is a little stretchy like rubber it may be slivers of black gearbox sealant. Loctite 5910 or 598

Have you tried a magnet or looked to see if it is rubbery? Possibly hose? We may need a little more info.

Thanks for the reply, Roger. The gearbox hasn't been serviced since I've had the engine. When I bought the engine 330 hours ago it had just had a prop strike inspection by a Rotax service center. The objects in question do not respond to a magnet. I put one under the scope again just now, and they are almost perfectly cylindrical in cross section and taper to both ends. You can squish the flat somewhat with a small tool. The best way I can describe it is they are the consistency of licorice. They don't seem to stretch, but will tear in two instead. Your idea of possibly being made of sealant seems like a good possibility to me.

The gearbox should have been removed and inspected for the prop strike. Still sounds and looks like gearbox sealant. Without seeing it it isn't 100%.

They appear to be brush hairs. You mentioned they were cylindrical and the two pieces in the picture appear to be very similar diameter. I dont see that it is going to be sealant.
It is possible something like the oil tank has been cleaned out with a brush which has resulted in the oil being contaminated?

    Hi Cnrad,

    That's a good observation. I don't use a bush so I didn't even think along those lines.
