I'm running out of ideas getting my 912ul to run right. I've gone through the carbs twice and synced them at 2500 and 3500(with both a carbmate and guages) rpm but it still runs rough with a 250 rpm mag drop on either ign. Is there anyway to tell if I'm chasing an iginition problem or if something is still messed up with the carbs?
It's a mid 90's era engine and the ing. wires show their age but how can I tell if there is a problem. The plugs all look pretty much the same(lght brown) except the #1 cyl. which had both top and bottom plugs sooty.

Thanks

Probably carbs. The #1 plugs are always darker if you idle before checking them, due to the unequal induction manifolds.
Try a mag drop at 3000, 4000 and 5000 rpm. Any noticeable change? If it gets better at 5000 then it is the carbs (the ignition cannot fix itself but the carbs go thru different stages; from idle jet to needle and the transitioning to main jet so that can affect the mag drop.
    Or:
Thy moving the needle up or down. Does the mag drop improve or worsen? if so the carbs are at fault.
