Cruze'n along with the trusty 912 ULS turning 4,800 RPM when I notice the oil pressure is pegged at 145 psi. The factory sez 73 psi is max. Smartly I execute a 180° turn and retrace the ten miles to the airport.

While taxiing back to the shadeport I goof with the throttle and see that the oil pressure rises and falls with the RPM, but by the time it gets to 4,000 RPM we're showing 100 psi. Inspection shows no leakage.

I'm hoping it's something cheap, easy and on top...

Any help troubleshooting this would be most appreciated... Thanks in advance.

    Hi Henry,

I have found if it rises and falls with the throttle to check my grounds especially on composite planes.
My bet is a loose wire at a connection. Possibly a bad sender, but this isn't characteristic of a bad sender.

I doubt it is a real pressure, but the only way to to absolutely sure is to put a gauge inline.
Do the wires and connections first.

    JThanks Roger,

    Went to the airport, de-cowled.

At the sensor I found the connection between the lead and the crimped on "eye" connector questionable. The lead wouldn't pull out of the connector, but I could wobble it around and feel that it was loose. I cut the plastic away from the crimp. I reset the crimp and soldered the connection. Put it back on the sensor and... no change.

    Things I noted:

Engine hasn't run in two days but gauge shows 75 psi when I put the MAIN on.
The 145 psi I saw when flying is what the gauge shows when I remove the lead from the sensor... Open circuit, zero ohms...
Between the connecting post on the sensor and the engine case shows 110 ohms.

I goofed around with the leads and connectors on the display. Everything seems tight and secure.

    h.

It may be just time to replace the pressure sender.
