Hello,
OurEurostar EV97 group has just got the devastating news of metal fragments in the oil filter/detector, 800hours approx on the engine, aircraft bought new in 2006. has been superb machine up to now, hard to sart in psat month or so and seeminly stiffer prop. Anyone out there suffered this calamity? Is there anything we can do other than install a new engine? Good secondhand engines are a rare item. Any comments appreciated.

I wonder if it is the "old style" crankcase?

    That's not good news :-(

I see you are in Ireland, I don't know who can help you over there but it might be worth contacting some of the guys over here (England) for a recommendation. You could try the following: Kevin Dilks (Special Aviation Services), Conrad Beale (Conair Sports) or Gary Masters (Air Masters). Unless you have had a catastrophic crankcase failure then you can probably have the engine repaired.

The Eurostar is easy to work on and the engine can be removed in about half a day. You need a 1/2 pallet crate and then use a pallet courier to take it to the repairer. To give you a guide, a recent rebuild over here on a 912UL cost about £2k which included rings, seals and bearings. If you need crank work, a new cam or gearbox parts then add another £1k each.

However you look at it, it will still be cheaper than a second hand engine and you will have had it fully inspected. All the second hand engines I have seen for sale over here are all high hours (2000+) flying school motors.

    Good luck!

    Kevin

thanks for your very interesting reply Kevin. It's looking like the gearbox from the comments we are getting and we have decided on an oil sale check and proably bench test also and hopefulynrebuild the gearbox. So a lot more positive outlook today than last week and hopefully we may be back in the air in a few months!

The gearbox is easy to remove and can be shipped to someone with the tools and expertise to check/repair it. I had to have the prop shaft and drive dog replaced in mine at about 700hrs.
