Here's a dumb question. You are supposed to purge oil system whenever an oil line is broken, but after draining my oil tank to clean it out, I wonder when you drain the oil from the tank through the drain plug, once the oil level gets below the oil pick up tube, doesn't the oil flow out of that tube and let air into the system? Does Rotax just factor in this air into the procedure as not enough to hurt anything like changing the oil filter? Any thoughts?

Oil does drain from the tank, the inner tubes in the tank and usually the fittings right at the top of the tank. This is normal during an oil change and no oil purge is required.

My oil tank and engine are situated where it's impossible to remove the plug.
I need to undo the top fittings, (in and out) remove the lid, screen and bottom spacer. This is done AFTER turning the prop to get all the oil into the tank.

I then use a suction pump to remove the oil from the tank, clean the screen and wipe the excess oil from inside the tank.

So far, I've never found sludge at the bottom of the tank and the screen has always been clean. Oil changed at or before 50 hrs.

    Hi Rich,

Perfect timing here for some videos.
Here is what happens when oil is left too long and the wrong type oil is used. The 912ULS engine is a 2008 with 83 hours TTSN.

You're going to love this. :pinch:

Can someone tell us what "wrong oil" was used and how many hours before changeout?

The logbooks done by the A&P mechanic border on criminal in my mind. The only oil listed was Valvoline at 25 hrs. back in 2009. No other entries in the books other than each year it said it was found to be in a safe condition for operation. There were many things wrong here and this was just one of them. So the oil may be as old as 6 years, no one knows and the oil maybe auto full synthetic. It will not suspend the lead and isn't a motorcycle oil that will protect the gearbox. The oil cooler had to be flushed. My bet is the crankcase has a bunch of lead in the bottom, the gearbox and any other place oil goes.

Even with the years in age the lead fell out of solution in 58 hrs.
Using the proper oil and not letting Joe next door convince you all oils are equal is a bad idea.
(I hope Joe doesn't read this  )

If good documentation had been done we would know. The logbook had a 2-3 line entry for each annual and not a single detail.
