    Thanks Roger, your opinion is appreciated - as always. I was worried that the black debris in the float bowl was from the blemish on the float. If so, will it go on shedding bits in future?
    If it's a one off, I'll clear the main jet, clean up the float - and give it a go. John

    Did you ever find the cause? I had a similar issue and it ended up being a fuel shut-off valve that wasn't opening all the way. The engine ran fine except at full power, then it'd stumble and surge.

    Thanks Brad. I found some small particles in the float chamber on the right. When tested with a magnet they were attracted so I assume they are ferrous (ie nothing to do with the blemish on the float). They must have been from the fuel line downstream from the gascollator (which had nothing in its filter). I presume they somehow got in during construction. Once removed, and carburettors cleaned, everything worked well. The metal particles must have been stopping the needle from fully rising, perhaps being sucked up as the throttle fully opened.
