we have a 912ULS, starts very easily, no problem there, idle and low power while taxiing, no apparent issues, runups and ignition checks show nothing abnormal, the usual RPM drops, and a little bit of roughness. EGT's all fine
full power RPM seams fine, though a little down on power, did not climb as well as it should.
reduce power to cruise RPM, usually 5100 rpm, and it ran very rough,
turned 1 mag off, ran Very rough, mag back on, back to normal roughness, other mag off, nothing changed, just usual roughness, check other mag off again, Very rough again, but this time noticed #2 EGT drop to half the usual value. mag back on, back to the usual rough, by this time i was downwind, and returning to the airport, EGT#2 was still low, and roughness as before, then suddenly the roughness went away, well, not totally, but went to a more smooth, but slight roughness, #2 EGT returned to normal in line with the other 3 cylinders.

We had this issue on the second last flight, and before todays flight, replaced and gapped all the spark plugs to manual specifications, replaced 1 suspect spark plug lead cap. when replacing the plugs, we noted that #1 cylinder plugs, 1 was wet with fuel, and the other a black sooty colour, all others were fine, we figured this was due to a very loose plug lead cap, and replaced it.

obviously that was not the problem....

Hoping someone here might have had a similar issue, or know of a possible known fault and where to look before we go replacing the ignition system.

thank you

This may be a carb issue and not electrical. How many hours on the engine? When were the carbs last checked and or floats weighed? When was the last carb sync? Have you watched the throttle arms move open and closed on the ground? Make sure the chokes fully close. Have you checked the prop blades to make sure they are all equal and out of curiosity what is your WOT rpm in level flight?

The engine is just out of a 1000 hr maintenance, carbys have both been rebuilt by rotax distributor and mechanics, floats are new. carby sockets are new. time between 1000 hr check and problem now is about 6 hours.

I still don't think this is electrical because of the EGT drop and I don't think it's gearbox vibration because of the EGT drop.
Since carbs were worked on and this could easily be caused by a fuel issue and it seems to effect the EGT my money is on the carbs. Hook uo a set of carb sync gauges. Not an electronic one.
See if the gauges point you to one carb or the other.

we think you could be right, checked all plugs, gaps and leads, all seam ok, then looked at the carbies, bith hit full throttle stops at the same time, and both hit idle stops at the same time, but what we did find, pulling back from full throttle to cruise power, one carby moved a substantial amount more than the other. we mechanically synced them again, same issue, so looked at the cable routing, and noted that the left hand throttle lever arm moves a different length to the right hand side, We did a mod to have both carby cables the same length, one coming from each throttle rod through the firewall, but failed to notice the original carby cable lever, on the left hand side where both used to be, is shorter than the lever arm the new right hand carby cable runs from.

so, solution, restore carby cables to the original setup and run engine again, and also, do a vacumm balance.
