I suppose you have seen the latest Rotax Service Instruction announcing the new spark plugs and connectors. It appears they are Rotax branded so bye-bye the $3 NGK spark plugs we have all been using successfully for many years. I haven't seen any pricing yet, but will not be surprised if they are priced around $30 each like Lyc and Cont plugs. Seems to me like a thinly disguised attempt to cash in on the maintenance market under the pretense of an "improvement". Thankfully this is not a mandatory change, and I plan to stay with the NGK plugs. I would really like to know what exactly the "improvement" is? It seems to me it would be very difficult to improve something that has never had any problem that I am aware of, is readily available, is priced very attractively, and is rock solid reliable.

The improved plug may be an arguable improvement, that I won't argue.
The New plug caps may be the real improvement.

Will the New Caps fit properly on the existing Plugs?

[strike]New caps are for NEW PLUGS ONLY, and new plugs must be used with NEW CAPS only. And[/strike]

    UPDATE...

It is allowed to use 8 old spark plugs with 8 new caps.
It is allowed to use 8 new spark plugs with 8 old caps.

It is not allowed to use 1 old spark plug with 7 new spark plugs (and all other combinations of mixture old and new spark plugs).
It is not allowed to use 1 old cap with 7 new caps (and all other combinations of mixture old and new caps).

as mentioned in the document, you must upgrade all 8 plugs or all 8 caps at once, if you are going to upgrade at all. (The new style plugs cannot be mixed with the old plugs - and the new style caps cannot be mixed with the old caps)

PS: for those maybe not familiar with the Terminology, "cap"= "boot" = "spark plug connector"...

" if you are going to upgrade at all."

I can see a lot of people not transitioning.

Wasn't anything physically wrong with the NGK just politics and liability.

The new plugs have a substantially wider gap. I wonder how that fits into the existing ignition system? I see it is a dual electrode; maybe that has something to do with the wider gap?

After reading the 8 pages of the instructions, there seems to be a lack of instruction!

Yes! I know that if you need to be told every detail you should not be doing it in the first place.
The instructions are idiot proofed enough to remind you to hook the battery back up when you are done. Duh!
But not enough to tell you to remove the old plugs and discard them before installing the new ones. Yea! Obvious enough!

Nothing in the instruction section tells you to specifically replace the Spark Plug Connectors or how to do it.
Do they Pull Off, or Unscrew? How do you tell if they are installed on the wires correctly?

The instructions are a little short on details.
