Hi everyone

I operate a Savannah with about seven hundred hours on frame and engine, 912ULS.

Recently had the misfortune to have my sprag clutch die. We finally got the engine to run, but it was evident the sprag was history. A replacement was put in by a reputable engineer who has done a few before, fully referenced to the heavy maintenance manual etc.

I was lucky enough not to have to take the engine out so the only electrics undone were two of the module plugs, a module earth and the trigger coils. The engineer undid the trigger coils to move them out of the way to prevent any damage while pulling the wheel off.

When he put them back I noticed he didn't use a gauge to set the clearance (0.3-0.4mm) On completing the job the engine won't start. Prop spins fast enough that blades can't be seen, gets the oil pressure well up.

Everything seems OK. My question is, if the trigger coil gap was say, 0.6 would that be enough to preclude the engine generating a spark?

Thanks

Peter

yes too wide a gap will cause starting issues. before you trash the sprag with lots of hard starts get this rectified.
The trigger coils have a minimum and maximum gap spec and that must be adhered to. I usually use the minimum. If I were you I would have these checked and reset. It spells out how to do it in the manual.

Thanks Roger I finally have time away from work tomorrow to disassemble things enough to check the gaps.

I certainly hope it's not a dead stator....

Finally got some time off work to check this....gaps way off. Set them down to 0.33mm and success. Happy. Peter
