I am the owner of an Autogyro, with a 912ULS Rotax with backup electric fuel pump. The plane is 5 years old and has just had its 5 years maintenance.

Lately I’ve experienced two identical incidents. I stood waiting to line up for the runway, made my radio call and during (or just after the call) I increased throttle to drive up the runway.
The moment I increased throttle the motor when off completely. No rough running, I was just like the ignition switches were switched off, the motor stopt running immediately.

I think I recall that with the motor shutting down, also my radio went dead, but I am not 100% sure of that.

After about a minute I switched the contact key off and on again and could restart the engine. I went takeoff and everything was back to normal. However, some days later the same thing happend again: waiting for 10 minutes or so to line up for the runway, during or just after the radio call I gave throttle to start driving, and within a second the motor completely shut down.

The electric backup fuel pump was on both times. The temperature the first time was 29C/85F, the second time 23C/74F. The maintenance company says they’ve checked everything, fuel flow, wiring, etc, but can’t find the solution. Does anybody know what this could be?

It sure sounds electrical vs fuel. Loose wire, wire shorting out on another metal surface from abraded insulation? The key switch wires loose? If you haven't found it start over on the diagnostics, but look at electrical. Maybe resort back to old school stuff. Start it up and get behind the switch and panel and wiggle the appropriate wires then branch out from there.
It has to be a major wire(s) because it shuts down everything in an instant.

    Dear Roger,
We looked at all the wiring, possible loose or damaged ones, or loose key switch, etc. Everything is ok. Could it be something with the electric pump disfunctioning which stops the fuel flow suddenly? Or could it be something with the engine, running stationary for 10 minutes and then suddenly giving throttle?

1st thing: Do not attempt to fly until you have found and corrected the problem!
I agree with Roger, it sounds like a electrical problem, most likely the rotary switch if that is what you have.
If you do have a rotary ignition switch remember the engine generates its own ignition power so what is the common link between the airframe and the ignition? Answer: the switch. Take it apart and check for arcing/burning of the contacts. Then replace it with 1000x more reliable toggle switches :)

I think Rob is right. I would take a hard look at the ignition switch. I just had an issue on another plane and it was the rotary switch.

Dear Rob, Roger, thanks, I'll ask the maint. guys to look at the rotary ignition switch. There are two ignition switches, one for every pair of cylinders -see the cockpit picture-, the two switches are at the bottom of the console, directly left above the keys. Wouldn't it be a big coincidence if the two switches failed at the same time?
