Seems to be typical of 912s , seems to fire btdc and kicks back, new starter is supposed to help. Also gear s may need attention . Also possible cdi module is weak.

The high torque gold colored starter is better than the old black one. More torque more muscle. They turn at the same speed.
I had a plane back around 2003 that had a black starter. Took forever to get it started on a cold morning. I put a bigger amp battery in and changed out the old black starter to the high torque and it never again had an issue. Fired right up every key turn.

I just had an owner that wanted me to install the Skytec in his Rans Coyote II. His was a 1998 (black starter) 912ULS. So far so good. No leaks and seems to kick the engine much better than the old starter. Skytec claims it's the same as a Rotax one, but I'm not going to compare because I truly don't know any differences. I wouldn't have done this except it is an amateur built plane. I tend to stay with Rotax parts and not use aftermarket. There have been in the past small difference that the aftermarket people didn't know about and caused issues with some parts. Some are not up to the Rotax standard or have the hours of testing.

The cold morning starts is why this owner wanted it done to. Seems to work.

Do you remember if they are a similar size? The C42 has no space for the heavy duty rotax starter, so wondered if the Sky-Tec would be an option.

    Thanks

Why won't the high torque starter fit. The Skytec is the same size as the Rotax high torque from what I can see.

Both high torque starters do have the 2 protrusions that stick out. I have seen people cut those off for close quarters.

Why won't the high torque starter fit. It's the same size and fits in a tucked in area and shouldn't stick out. The Skytec is the same size as the Rotax as far as I know.
