Has anyone seen a collar like this one around the keepers in the gear box? It doesn't seem to compress in the press, and I don't want to force it since I am unfamiliar. It's an older model 912.

That is pretty old, but functionally the same as the new collar that also serves as the drive gear for the gov or vac pump.
You depress the dog-gear, not the collar, and then pull the clips out. See Heavy Maint Manual.
should only be done by trained tech.

Thanks Rob, I'm current Rotax Heavy mx. Started to compress it, but it didn't act like the newer ones so I wanted to get a second opinion before I made the prop shaft shorter.

    HA! good one.
its over 25 years old so probably stuck, give it a smack with a deadblow hammer to break the crusty stuff off.
If it still has the brass thrust washer and spring bushing replace them with new washer and bushing.
make sure you align the clips with the old wear marks when putting it back together. Otherwise you get a lot of pressure on the edge and a piece of spline will pop off.
