Was very disappointed to find this black deposits inside my brand new engine carbs. Having trouble getting a smooth idle I'll be cleaning the carbs this weekend. I know the engine was run at the factory but are they using ethanol fuel and not removing it before shipment?

Thousands of engines have been running on fuel containing ethanol for many years without any issues.

The engine is designed and approved for use with Mogas containing up to 10% Ethanol.

The debris may have come in with your fuel, but it has nothing to do with Ethanol.

Bill, thanks for the reply but the black coating was on the brass parts before I ran the engine. I pulled the bowls and ran fuel through the system to make sure it was flowing. Whatever caused it was done at the factory or maybe Bing. This is a replacement engine for my Kitfox I have run a 912ULS in it for over 17 years. Always performed my own carb sync and ran like a top. This engine has been a job to get running smoothly the wire for the #4 coil was not in the connector all the way. This caused a complete miss in the number 4 cylinder (I don't know why it didn't fire from the other plug). After fixing that it runs good over 2500 and I have flown it but the idle is poor and won't go below 2000 (my old engine ran very smooth down to 1700). I'm going to clean both carbs and see what happens this weekend.

I agree with the ethonal statement but when you leave it sit it will cause corrosion and this looks like a bad case of it.

Happy to report Lockwood sent me new brass parts and carb kit under warranty. I did clean some brass with vinegar as nothing else I tried touched the black deposits. Put the carbs on and it ran perfectly I was able to sync them and get a smooth idle.

Bing 64 Carbs are from the 70s, Yes rotax engines will run fine on E10 and is approved,, but it has caused problems, Like what you see here,

Incidently, i have an 20 yr old paper copy of operators manual for 582, It cautions against the use of Alcohol blended fuels. Todays revision allows 10%.
