I am the owner of a new aircraft with a Rotax 912 iS Sport powerplant. I attended RFSC Rotax training for iRMT 9 Series Service Specialty course. The instructor mentioned adding a bottle of Seafoam to the oil tank, then flying the aircraft for 30-40 minutes before performing the usual oil change/oil filter change. This to clean the lead deposits from the gear box and oil system. My engine has been fueled exclusively with Avgas 100LL so far. I would prefer using Mogas, but at my FBO none is available and I would literally have to bring the Mogas to the airfield in 6 gallon containers and fuel my plane personally. I plan on adding Decalin to the fuel in the future.

My question is- Does anyone have experience in adding Seafoam to the oil system of a 912 engine prior to a scheduled oil change?

    We just covered this Recently.

There are products made specifically for this but NONE that you will want to Fly the plane with.

Fly the pattern to heat and thoroughly mix the oil, then land, add the Snake Oil, and Idle under 3000 RPM for 10-15 minutes.

Finally, drain the oil without delay before it has the chance to settle again.

Plenty of folks bring their own MoGas to the field.

If your FBO gives you grief, remind him that Unleaded MoGas IS the recommended fuel and that you would be happy to buy his if he wanted to start supplying it.

The cans you want are VP Racing Fuel Jugs.  Google it!

They are labeled as 5 gallons for legal purposes but will hold 6+ gallons if you fill them to the top.

Hint: the square version takes up the least floor space.

You do not want anything larger because of the weight.  6 gallons plus the can is just over 40 lbs.

Be sure to buy the RED colored jugs because it is illegal in most states to put Mogas in any other color can at a retail gas station.

Nobody will probably notice or care, but why set yourself up for grief?

You can often find these for under $20 locally or a case of 4 for under $100 including shipping from online sellers.

These are better made than anything you will find at the big box retailers.

    Agree with Bill 100%,

I have been using Mogas in my 912IS for 650 hr, I am over 60 and the workout is great. The only thing I would add is that I have two 20L collapsible "Jerry cans" that I take on long trips

very useful and fold up nice in the plane...
