white goop soup in carb bowls
Hi again, all --
I'm weighing the floats on a customer's plane today, and I've just taken off the bowls. Holy smokes -- what is that stuff?!? I've attached pictures.
Much googling later, I've read quite a few stories of aluminum hydroxide and corrosion and flaking, but nobody has mentioned "flowing goop" like this. My first guess was that it's a fuel/H2O emulsion, but I'm not sure.
This plane tends to mostly sit, getting sadly too few hours each year, and so any water in the bowl would quite likely lead to corrosion. [Is there an easy way to drain bowls from the bottom, BTW?] I'd love to know that a good bowl cleaning will do, but if it all needs more attention I don't want to miss that.
Oh, and he has the new (three-dot) floats, so we'll document that and inspections can then shift from annual to 200h ... unless he has other issues to keep checking every year :-/
Thanks & have a great weekend
