Re: oil pressure regulator spring wear

excuse me one more question...
in one document about oil system I just found this:
"The pump forces oil through a filter cartridge the oil
passes through the matting to the inside of the filter. If the filter cartridge is completely clogged
up, the pressure relief valve opens and oil will flow unfiltered into the engine. Prevent this
situation by all means, using oil and filter as specified and punctual change of oil filter."
I suppose, the pressure relief valve written here is different from valve we talked about before? Am I right? Where is this "regulator"? Should be checked also?

The Oil Pressure REGULATOR is the Ball and Spring in the Bottom of the Oil Pump.
The Oil Filter Cartridge (The Oil Filter) has a bypass valve internal to the Filter that will bypass the filter in the event the filter suffers an extreme backpressure issue. Dirty Oil is better than NO Oil at all.
There is no way to Check/Test/Verify the internal bypass valve in the Filter.
The Oil Pressure Regulator and Sensor are located AFTER the Oil Filter in the 912 Carbureted engines.
As the Filter becomes restricted The Pressure regulator will compensate for the pressure drop.
The Oil Pressure Regulator is located BEFORE the Oil Filter in the 912is and 915 engines.
If you are used to seeing 40psi of Oil Pressure and the pressure uneplainably drops to 30 psi, This could be an indication of an Oil Filter restriction.
In reality, as long as you replace the Oil Filter at every Oil Change and do not run the Oil for more than 50 hours you should never have a problem.
Change Oil at 25 Hours if using leaded AvGas (100LL). The lead and the Oil do not play well together.
There are a lot of other things that you could worry about, but this is not one that should keep you up at night.

I have always changed my oil and filter at 50 hours, but the current maintenance manual only requires it every 100 hours; or 50 hours if using 100LL fuel more than 30% of the time...
